For that, just spray the entire engine bay with WD, then start it up. One stray spark is all it needs. Better still, for that really explosive effect, use Easy Start instead. Just make sure there's nothing you care about within a few yards of the car.

Sounds like a bad connection or bad earth ?
Edit - have you checked the engine earth connection, as this can cause all sorts of weird problems.
