There's a gesture called the "Audi 200 salute" - Audi 200 drivers passing one another salute by slapping the top of the instrument binnacle on the right side. This generally restores speedo function for a day or two.

The problem is that the speedo is mounted on the PCB by being slid down over several square pins - over time the solder cracks at the bottom of the pins and you get intermittent contacts.

Scott's site describes where to touch a soldering iron to repair these cracks.
