Changing the oil filter on an oil change is a MUST. There is a pressure relief valve in the filter and if this becomes blocked the filter is by-passed completely, allowing all the crap in the system to circulate rather than get trapped.
A filter is only a few £, seems crazy they would cgharge u all that and miss something so fundamental!
