cable on my old b3 coupe went a bit slack once and couldnt open it, bent a length of 1/4" bar about 2" from the end at 90degrees, cut a slot in it, and poked it through the grill, locate the cable through one of the holes in the metal work near the catch 'and gave it a good tug' (no reference to missfires latest keira knightely post!) and the bonnet will open! I have the said tool (not missfire) sat in the top of my tool box unused for the last 8 years gathering dust so if your really struggling its yours! other advice is to get an a2, you dont have to open the bonnet on them till they have there own section on classic audi!
