Changing the engine mountings on a 200
I need to change the engine mountings on my 200-what is the best way to do this?
I thought I could spin off the top mounting nuts then drive the car up on ramps, put a jack under the sump, undo the nuts on the mountings, change them over one at a time, then tighten all the nuts up again. Is it best to replace all the nuts and bolts as well? The Haynes manual makes it sound too easy! Any advice would be gratefully received!! cheers Rob |

Hi Rob
I would only say dont jack up under a sump pan on any car mate.It will crush it. I dont have experience with the 200 (yet;)),but I have either used an engine hoist (which I assume you dont have, maybe borrow one if you can),or jack up on a solid looking piece where the engine mates to the gearbox. sometimes you wonder what haynes were on when the books were written.....:yikes:
i'm sure mine says ''jack the sump'' too...............:wierdo: would be carefull of 'lifting' too much, the engine to any extent... could stress the gearbox mounts and drive shafts/transaxles.....maybe just hold the engine where you want it.. |
Thanks for the advice
I think that the jack is just put under the sump to hold the engine steady when you remove the mountings. The only snag I can see is that you have to lift the engine slightly to get out the old mounting. It would be beter to use a hoist methinks! cheers guys |
hiya best to hire a hoist for the weekend.undo the mounts and then raise up the engine (carefully,as it will want to list to one side .a friend is handy at this point to move engine left and right)i had to borrow a friend from someone else.......the mounts are easy to remove at this point one side at a time.....but whatever you do dont jack up the sump because it will collapse.
hope it all goes well simon |
That's how did mine, although I used a block of wood between the jack and the sump.
You're only really supporting the engine while the mount is off. Best to remove the top nut while the car is on the ground with the weight of the engine on it. Sometimes the engine mount can collapse and the rod will just spin. Then you are in trouble. |
