selling a SORN'd car
 

Hi,

Should be selling one of my cars in the next few days or so, it is currently SORN.
When it is sold, it won't be going back on the road, so the new owner will have to SORN it straight away (as the SORN notice is for ME and the car, not just the car)

How does the new owner go about doing this, bearing in mind he will only have the tear off bit of the V5, as I will send off the big bit???

but if the new owner doesn't do it straight away (i,e. on the date of sale), then they will be liable for the fine, as in the intervening few days, it is not SORN, and the DVLA are a bunch of (INSERT WORDS HERE).........

So, buy car, get home, SORN on line straight away.......

I think you'll be okay all the while both V5 slips are sent to the DVLA with matching date of sale. After that date of sale, it's out of your hands.

PS - The last bit you've typed rather reads like you're buying a SORN'd car not selling one....:idea:

No if a car was sorned before 2000 leave it rest ;) Why prod something that doesnt need prodding ;)

As soon as the v5 arrives in the name of the new keeper, they can sorn it. Until then, I don't think it's a problem. Only the reg'd keeper can sorn it, so once it's in that name, they can sorn it. A mate of mine asked the DVLArse about this when he bought a cat C write off from Blue Cycle. He tried to sorn it straight away with a form from the post orifice, but the DVLArse sent it back to him saying he couldn't do it until he had the docs in his name, which he didnt' have, as it was a cat C and as such, the document hadn't been issued and wouldn't be until it passed a VIC. Bloody red tape eh ? This is what governments promised to get rid of wasn't it ?

@ Amanda - I bought the car in 2008, and have SORNd it ever since.

@ 12£goat - this is the situation where it is not clear. What if the V5 was sent from the DVLA, and you were on holiday for 2 weeks, and then when you got back you SORNd it. The incompetent nobbers would probably try and say you hadn't SORNd it as soon as you could. It is a very grey area, and not in the normal person's favour.......

But if you bear in mind that the Royal Mail don't guarantee any item posted will ever be deliverred, just say you never got the V5?

It's just the DVLA are a law unto themselves.
