Electrical diagram
Hi, having a bit of a problem with my headlights, was driving last night and my dipped lights stopped working and only my sidelights were working also my full beams would only work on flash and not on perm.
So far i have checked the fuses in the fusebox in the engine bay and all the fuses look fine and seemed to be working, i then checked the voltage supply to the lights and the dipped lights were only receiving 7.8volts where as they should be at 12v. If anyone has had this problem before on the same car, i would be more then glad to try the same thing on my car or also a wiring diagram would be really helpful too. I also think it could be a relay but there is not a relay in the fusebox for the headlights unless it is placed somewhere else on the car. Oh the car is an 89' Audi Coupe Quattro. Thanks for your help. |

right, electrics chapter been uploaded to my site.
chapter 12 - part 1 chapter 12 - part 2 (wiring diagrams) HTH :) |
Hey, give us whole manual, please :D
Actually mitchel on demand schematics are easier to read :) Here it is , I hope it will work with western IP's and sometimes that page doesn't work. To go to audi, pick Audi on left menu, then pick "Принципиальные схемы", then "Принципиальные схемы из Mitchell On-Demand", then choose year, model etc. Note - mitchell on demand schematics are american, so keep in mind americans got audis one year later than europeans. Ok, back to topic. If I understand correctly, low beams and high beams doesn't work and works only side markers + interior lights? Sounds like light switch doesn't work :) Do u have rounded switches or old non-rounded ones? Rounded switches can be opened and contacts cleaned. To prevent that in future, relays for headlights must be used. |
whole haynes is online, that was purely the chapter that was needed in this instance.

From your description of the fault, the most likely cause is the dip/main beam steering column switch. The main beam working on flash would suggest that you have 12v feed to the switch. It could be the latching changeover mechanism jammed up or disintegrated inside.
I know type 85's quite well but I think they are pretty much the same looking at the diagrams kindly posted by monkeyboyuk. (chapter 12 part 1 page 12.33) To prove it, you could bypass the switch. Root around under the steering column and find the multi-plug that feeds the switch (you might have to remove the column bottom cover). Unplug it, you should have 12v on the red wire (ro - pin 30) and on the black/yellow wire (sw/ge pin X) when the ignition is on. Short out between the red wire and the white/black wire (ws/sw - pin 56a) Then short between the red wire and the yellow (ge) wire (ge - pin 56b). If you get dipped and main beam its definately the switch. Hope this helps. |

P.S. That "chapter 0" doesn't work, if there is something. |
i have 2 copies and chopped one up. scanned it and kept the other for me. plan is to have large screen hooked up to internet and home network in my garage then i can access my haynes on big screen maybe even a sky feed :)

I would take a guess at the switch itself i have had the same fault twice
|
These are renowned for failing hence why its best to get relays in there as the whole current for the lights goes through effectively a small switch contact. As the flash works I would test the main light switch first as flash comes from a different source.. Have a relay diagram to upgrade the lights if you want it..
