1.8 DZ tuning

As some of you know I have an Audi 80 Sport with the 1.8 8v DZ engine. I was looking at doing a 20v turbo swap. But I have decided I want to keep this car original as possible.

I know the 2.0 8v bottom end is a popular mod for this engine and the bottom end is not very expensive either. I do not really want to get fast road cams because they are a tad expensive, any other mods I can do to this engine to improve performance. I am going to be stripping the cylinder head soon, to replace the camshaft seal, will probably replace all other seals and gaskets whilst I am it.

Any recomendations.. I am not looking to break the bank on this one, just want to give the engine a little overhaul.

can't give any input to this at the moment, but I'll be watching this thread develop a bit as my intention was the 1.8T lump at first but going to stick with the DZ engine as to be fair, it's a bloody goodun' (apart from the exhaust falling off yesterday!)

send the head to tony (4V6 on here).

what exhaust system do you have on yours. Gotta replace the one on mine this week and have just got a quote from our local Powerflow dealer to have a customer one made up for around £250 fitted.

I am using the stock manifold and downpipe which all seem in good condition, I have had a new silencer and new back box fitted to the car.

I am also going to be fitting a rear brake disc conversion using Mk2 16v donor parts. Handling and braking is more or less sorted, just need to give the engine a little poke and the car will be just the way I want it.

What can tony (4V6 on here) do to the head?

Been thinking about one, group buy ?? !!!

As for the 1.8DZ, other than a bore to 1.9, head + cam will see about 135bhp. If you are stripping it then I'd balance everything as well.
A 2 litre will give you more torque but virtually no more power - I know because I ran one in a B3 Sport :D , BRMotorsport, head, Shrick split cam, Sebring exhaust , about 134 bhp and eventually had the ignition electronics seen to by AmD ( Geoff Everett, not the other more recent lot ) and he got it to 138 bhp and about 145 lbs feet. Ran really strong, love to have the car back now, G 780 DDP in white.....

I seriously think you're wasting your time and money with the discs BUT I'd be interested in how you manage , parts costs and any difficulties.... I'v e often thought about it.
Sports have much bigger rear drums , 200 mms, against the other 80 models 180 mms.
I think some late, 1980s early 19990s, model Passat estates even had about 220- 2330 mms ??

83mm pistons, headwork, piper 270 or 285 cam, 5 Cyl throttle body & warm up reg, Jetex zorst, circa 135 bhp nice engine- same spec as the 1.8 GTI DX motor- same mods apply.
Had one with the ally "winged" sump- very bad for oil surge- strange as it had plenty of baffles inside- ended up DIYing a standard steel one never had a prob again...
