6 speed transplant: upgrade or nonsense?
I am making up a list (with a life of it's own) of things to do on my 1993 Audi 80 2.0 16v, as I believe in upgrading parts, not just replacing. This of course, makes life interesting to the point of madness..at times. I sense a lot of Audi fanatics experience the same, though.
Nonetheless, I have a question (1st of many). Will the 6 speed gearbox fit my car? If so, where is the difference in gear ratios, from 1st through the whole range? What could the effect be performance / economy-wise? (Sorry, it always starts with just 1 question...) |

Have all the info necessary if it was a 5 cylinder... |
can't really see the advantages of fitting a 6 speed box to the 2.0l engine?
|
To be honest, after reading some feedback, neither am I, unless the power plant is upgraded as well, as some mentioned. Time to rethink!
|
Thank you, I will do some more homework on this, it seems as if I will have to rethink process and change powerplant to really get the benefit. I will keep you in mind should I stumble upon a 5 cylinder, which seems to be very popular and full of grunt!
Enjoy. |
Unless it's the 20v or 20v turbo lump (S2/S2 avant), then you'll find the 2.0 16v engine on a similar par performance wise with the earlier 2.2 or 2309 5 cylinder 10v engines.
You just don't get the same grunt with a 4 cylinder engine though! Although a decent exhaust system would help that a little! in fact, your engine should be 135hp and the 10v 5 cyl engines are 134hp. |

Much appreciated!:) |
The other choice is look at a more modern engine implant. Not sure how easy as I've not seen it done, but a 1.8T lump would always be a good talking point at the pub!
let alone the 2.7 biturbo V6 lump! |
an 1.8t will fit in there easly,i think even a v8 may fit as the engine bay in the b3 and b4 is big
|
several V8 conversions done in Europe, I've seen pictures ( a dark green series 4 comes to mind)
V8 into B2 4000 quattros in the USA.......silver one on Audiworld with loads of piccies of the various stages........ cannot find the piccies now I looked many months ago and they seem to have gone :( |
