A4 CD player lead ???
 

Guys - anyone used a panasonic multichanger cd unit (out of another audi) in a 1998 A4 ? Apparently a converter lead is required (plugged into the stock audi lead in the boot) to tell the stock audi concert head unit that it's dealing with a panasonic cd changer - does that sound right ? A Peripheral AUDPAN98 lead has been quoted as necessary, but ain't cheap, or even readily available - any ideas ? All comments welcome & much appreciated

My dad's 98 A4 has been using the panasonic changer unit for a year (with a Peripheral lead - green, approx 12" long) before it suddenly died while in use - trying to work out if it's the unit that has died or the 'converter' lead. There's power to the changer unit, but the head unit won't recognise/do shit & have been told that using a panasonic unit in an audi needs a 'converter lead' so that the head unit will work with the panasonic cd changer - anyone come across this before, or is it just an excuse for car audio firms to screw unnecessary cash out of us ? :confused:

anyone else out there had any probs fitting a cd changer unit to the stock audi concert head unit boot wiring loom ? does anyone recognise the problem ? am using stock 98 A4 head unit & cable to plug into an ex-audi (DPO610) panasonic cd changer. as usual, all replies much appreciated

I was told the same thing when I was going to fit a cd changer to my a6 special lead needed for the job ...it wasn't cheap IIRC

& amanda - are the 2 audis in your avatar photos yours ? good shout if so. off topic I know, but my own car is a 1988/9 A80Quattro - the engineering is astonishing (& madly robust, virtually made of girders) compared to the later audis I've played with, and yet despite running my quattro for 12 years now, I've never ever seen another like it, and I have been looking. other than this forum of marvellously helpful people, do you know of any other obvious web resources that I can look at to see if mine is either v rare (unlikely) or has been modified with badges etc ? i.e. I have quattro 4WD, an A80 (not coupe) bodyshell (damn tiny boot), 4-ring side decals, sadly underpowered FInj 1781 DZ engine, no power steering, a small painted rubber spoiler on the boot and no badges apart from the small 'quattro' front grille badge and a large QUATTRO badge on the boot lid. Is a fantastic car - daily use for last 12 years & no breakdowns, no replacements (ex front disks/pads 8 yrs ago) but since I haven't seen another am a bit concerned it's been made up from either the parts bin or from other cars!

Yes priced both the jobs up ( dealer fit and after market fitment)and ended up going with the audi cd as IIRC was only £50 difference

Thats the case, and if i remember correctly to use an aftermarket cd changer to work in the car you need an adaptor converter box that is usually around £50 to get say a sony ch changer to work with an original oem stereo. Then you may need the original after market cd changer lead (the 5 meter one), thats usally around £30 (maybe more) to hook it all up.

The best option is if there is a plug already in the boot to connect up a cd changer then try and source a second hand original, usually aslong as the plugs look the same then it will work, just plug and play.

Otherwise its probably cheaper to buy a new head unit.

thanks dynamodav - given that the cd changer came out of an audi & all head unit & loom etc are stock audi, was a bit surprised to be told that an aftermarket loom was needed. off to ebay to see where/how much these after market bits can be got !
