Door drops when opened
Hi all. Now that I'm doing all the pre summer checks, I've noticed that the passenger door drops slightly when opened and therefore needs lifting to properly shut it. Does anyone know of any fixes?
Cheers Stu |
My passenger side door has dropped as well. New hinges possibly? They do tend to drop over time. :wall:

is there any way to pack out the lower hinge, to push it out a fraction?
|
Is there any play in the pin? You could pack it out but it may be better to use a small wooden block between the door and the hinge and gently push against it to see how far it moves (only do it a bit at a time). Obviously if you bring the door up you'll need to adjust the hinge though.

Hmmmmm you can adjust the hinges ;)
|
Yep, they're adjustable but it depends on how worn it is?!
|
Ok, I'll give it a go tommorrow.
Cheers. |
The hinges are NOT adjustable to take out wear they are adjustable for alignment. You need new pins.
Adjusting because of wear is a complete bodge, Amanda like every thing else leave these jobs to the dealer. |
To help prevent hinge wear keep hinges lubed a couple of times a year with white lithium grease.

Leaving a door like that will cause more wear and damage to other things, such as the door catch, so rather than having the annoyance of it dropping when opened, I think I'd probably either replace the pinds if it's possible to do that, or adjust it, even if it isn't adjustable. It is adjustable, even if the hinges are welded directly onto the door and door posts, as they are on some modern cars. (especially the ones you have to Fix Or Repair on a Daily basis)
To bring a door upwards, you need to adjust the bottom hinge. A block of wood (as previously mentioned) can be used. Best to wrap or cover it in a piece of cloth or leather to prevent damaging the paintwork. (ball pein hammer also works for this). Place it between the door and door post level with the bottom hinge, and carefully push the door closed until it's gripping the wood. Push a bit more, then remove and check to see if it's moved the hinge enough. Repeat as necessary, until the door lines up properly. |
