Hi all,

I got linked here by Coxy from the S2 forum...(sorry for the almost identical thread!)

I have recently bought this car:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=270192805098

and picked it up two nights ago. It drives really nicely (even when compared to my mint '96 ABY coupe) and the exhaust sounds absolutely fantastic- epescially round town! Seems like a great car, you really have to look hard to find any rust and interior wise everything seems to work. Cat D, not an issue, it was a side impact (sicker hasn't been replaced) but the repair job seems top notch!

I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can, because those ones don't do the car justice.

Problems with the car, are as follows:

1. Idle control valve is broken, so car sits at 1500rpm when its warm. Not such an issue to me, but when coupled with no. 2, produces no.3....!

2. Thermostat for fan to come on obviously doesn't work. Theres an aftermarket (nice job actually) switch on the dash in place of one of the blank switches to turn the fan on.

3. I let it overheat (forgot to turn fan on when I was stopped for a few mins idling at 1500rpm) and water started to escape from the coolant reservoir through the filler cap. Topped it up etc and did 200 trouble free miles and then just tonight I was sat outside the house a bit long (again forgetting to swtich the fan on) after giving it some beans and it started to overheat a bit again and this time a small crack appeared in the side wall at the top of the coolant reservoir.

VERY ANNOYING, means I need to get a new reservoir now, anyone know where I can get one- and quickly? (bought this so that I didnt have to put loads of miles on my S2).

On a run the car runs so nicely, if a bit loud at times with that exhaust! But if I forget to put the very efficient fan on, it does seem to overheat within 2/3min.

Any replies would be very helpful!

Phil

Welcome over to the un-darkside!!!
(not that the S2Forum is the darkside of course, but owning a CQ could lead you over to the darkside if you're not careful!)

Car going well, seems to get 400mi to £60 of fuel (mainly motorway)... not bad really!

Got pretty hot this morning on the way to work, but I was going quite quickly and it cooled down afterwards! Got a new expansion tank, which seems to be doing its job! But its off my mate's '91 B3, so its identical appart from the mounting struts- their all different. But its held in place quite snugly by the coolant hoses and doesn't move around so I'll leave it until I can find an original one!

Exhaust isn't driving me crazy yet... but I just can't wait to get off the motorway to listen to it at slower speeds!

Still need to get the ISV sorted... it doesn't seem to be broken and I've got a spare one off my mate (for free!!). It seems like its just jammed open the whole time- maybe its just shorted to the battery and fails open?

This isn't very technical, but have you tried giving it a sharp but firm tap when it's stuck...? And does that change the Idle?..

Only it might just need a bubble bath in IPA.

I have cleaned it up in IPA, put it in a soak bath (thing we have at work) and then blasted all of the crap off it with a compressed air tool! The things cleaner than the day it was made LOL. Also I gave it a jab with a screwdriver (gently) and I could see that the spring/valve was moving easily (possibly a bit too easily for my liking, but then its only Atm. pressure air its re-direcing, not boost!).

I'm not 100% sure if I've fitted it back on properly... The guy I bought it from said it was running like crap when it was cold so he d/c the ISV and all that did was make it run at 1500rpm when warm. Then I showed my mates (who have various 5cyl audis) what I'd bought and they were looking around the engine bay and one of them re-connected something and I didn't really notice.

When I took the ISV off the car to clean it, I put it back in the same way (two pipes connected to it and an electrical connector in the back). And it hasn't changed from what it has been like the whole time... which is 1100rpm tickover when cold and then this rises to 1600rpm after I've been driving it for a few minutes.

To me (as an auto engineering student) it appears that it is jammed open and is feeding the car with more air constantly. The reason it idles lower when cold is because the oil is cold and so the engine does not physically need that much air. And then when it warms up, the oil is warmer and the engine is running more freely and the extra air (albeit atm. pressure) is making the thing run faster on idle. Which is why I think it might be jammed open the whole time.
