Starter Motor

Hi Guys,

Tried to start car tonight, found that I have a dead starter motor :wall: Yes I know I am not having much luck at the moment :nonod:

Went to order a starter and got confused on what one I need. It is for a '82 Coupe GT5s and this is the list I found:-

Can anyone advice what one I need or what the part code is:confused:

Presume you have confirmed that it is actually the starter motor at fault by eliminating the other prime candidates; ignition switch and solenoid?

I have voltage to the solenoid for the feed and main power lines - they are ok. So either the solenoid or motor, not sure which.

Easy way to test the starter in situ is to pull off the spade terminal to the solenoid and then simply connect 12volts to it via a short to the main power cable that cranks the starter over.

Just make sure youre not in gear.....squishy sounds would emanate from underside if not careful.
Should crank the engine over if you do the above if the starters ok.

^^^^ If it doesn't crank engine earth could be suspect.

Give the motor a clout, if it then does something then suspect the brushes are likely worn down and/or sticking.

I have put a volt meter to all the terminals and get the right voltage, will try putting a lead between spade connector and +ve terminal.

Tried that to the horror of the wife, still did not start.

Well today is the day, after work I will put a freshly charged battery in, arm myself with a nice hammer and a lead with 2 clips. Try and return everything everyone has recommended  then :grr::wall: if it does not work and guess which starter motor & solenoid I need and get new.
GSF quoted £112 + VAT :yikes: where as some of the ones i found on gaybay are only £69.99 to £79.99

Well went like this:-
Connected battery
Got in:tup:
Turned ignition on and everything lights up as before:tup:
Turned key and.................. it started :crazy:

No idea why, but running again. Maybe it was because there was a hammer sat on the floor ready to hit the starter.

Very interesting, do you think that maybe it was just the battery then? :hmmm:
