B3 Engine loom

Afternoon all,

Has anyone managed to pull the engine loom without removing the dash? Looks like the heater matrix has to come out so you can get to it, but not sure if the whole thing needs pulling out. Any ideas?

Cheers

Remove the glovebox door, then the fan housing (Item 3): http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+80+...1/8/819-84000/can be seperated from the heater box by levering the clips off that hold them together

You got the engine swapped yet?

Cheers Ben.

I've taken enough off to get the loom to a point where I can pull it through, which included some spills and skinned knuckles... Plan is to drop the 2.0 out while the loom is being sorted, so need to get it out and over to a pal sharpish.

I've got the 1.8t Sat waiting, intercooler and some other bits to at least keep me busy, plus I need to mock up some mounts. I'll post some pics when the loom is out.

Assuming its both the gold clips on the screws and the ones which connect the duct to the matrix? My goodness they are stubborn...

That gold clip in the center of the picture holds the ecu cage in place, you don't need to remove it, that stays with the fan housing. You pull the ecu down to remove it from the cage, there maybe a screw holding the ecu in at the bottom, hidden by the carpet in your pic.

To the right, just off the pic is where the fan housing and heater box join, that's held together with clips you prise off with a flat blade screwdriver, there is a clip or two behind, between the housing and bulkhead. There's some bolts and a spring clip under the scuttle holding the fan in place from above, plus the heater flap cables that lever off and you carefully unclip the clips that hold the cable outers as they break easily.

All the engine wiring goes through that grommit you can see in your pic, so it looks like you could leave the fan housing in place. It is very time consuming and frustrating to feed the loom back through the hole, and involves lots of trips from the footwell to the engine bay and back, which in your case will be harder as the engine is still in place, so make sure you have plenty of medication ready

Cheers Ben, have managed to disconnect from the ecu but the battery tray is causing nightmares. Looks easier to disconnect dash side and pull out as there is more room.

Any way of disconnecting the other part of the loom with the dash still in?
