Audi 100 speedo
 

Right, I had the usual "jumping speedo" problem. I followed these instructions:

and tried to fix it, now the speedo doesn't work at all.........

The "fix" is to remove the green "jumpers" and clean up the pins, which I did. Now it doesn't work.

What is the purpose of the pins and jumpers?

Can I just solder the two pins together? As the green jumpers don't (since I touched them) join the two pins........

Got until Monday to rectify the problem!

I have a soldering iron, and I know where to stick it!

So when Mrs PD is out of bed (illness running thru our house right now), I'll whip the dash out and try it out.

I soldered the wires, speedo still doesn't work.

All of the other gauges do though.

I reckon those jumpers may be for if you have cruise control or something

On mine, the speedo jumps about and won't read over 60, and the temp guage only works once in a while. I've had the whole thing apart twice, checked all the connections and still had no luck with it. Occasionally the green indicator bulbs on the dash interact with the speedo illumination and the blue one for main beam. Bad earth somewhere ? If it is, fcuked if I can find it.
Another thought. What if it's the drive pinion in the diff. I don't know if Audi 100s have one seeing as they're electronic. Or speed sensor.

Mine does the "indicator bulbs and main beam" too. Usually after 30 minutes driving.

Will put the soldering iron on the connections next week.

Sorted it today. The pins should NOT be soldered together, the green "jumpers" are actually "female sockets" to plug the speedo into when fitting it.

When I removed them, I ripped them off the PCB, so today I used some phone wire and joined the pins to the PCB.

Problem solved.

I also sprayed the board and plugs / sockets with Servisol switch cleaner, hopefully it will cure the "glowing indicator bulb" problem.

My B3's speedo used to have similar problem. Speedometer didn't worked at all, only sometimes it did some motion :D First, I disasembled it for some ten or twenty times, without any effect. Then I got idea that speedometer sender may be deffective - I borrowed it from junkyard - nothing. Then I borrowed instrument cluster from neighbour's american B3 - it worked, so problem was in my instrument cluster. There wasnt anything wrong on PCB, so I tried dissasemble speedo clock, in process I damaged it :D So, at last, yesterday I bought instrument cluster from B3 coupe 2.3 and used it as a donor [some time ago I did similar thing, only for other reasons :D ], so now I have working 260 kmph speedometer instead of dead 220 kmph one :)

Thanks, sorry the speedo works fine, it's the odometer that has packed up, is it the same fix and how easy is it to get the cluster out ?

hi, easy to get the cluster out, a couple of screws under the trim strip at the bottom of the cluster as you look at it, then some 10mm bolts i think (will go have a look, long time since i did it), then unplug all the connectors on the back. only took me about 10 minutes to get it out.

the odometer may be a mechanical glitch inside, not sure. i think the whole speedo unit only has a couple of electrical connections from the main board, so if the speedo is working it should all work i think. i didnt delve into the vdo speedo unit itself, though that would make interesting reading if you fancy giving it a go..!:eek::lol: i had fears of it all falling apart and me not being able to remember how it went back together..:lol:

i followed the smj autotechnik instructions and it all works now barring it needing a few new bulbs. turbo avant needs the same treatment now.:razz:

edit! yours is a 'square dash' model not 'curvy dash' but should be similar hopefully..?

I'll not swear to this, as I can't check with the spares I have right now, but I think the Odometer is driven by a stepper motor in similar fashion to that in the ur digidash cars. As Pimp says, the whole speedometer is a self contained module. So, if the odometer isn't running, the stepper motor circuit may be the cause.
