4x New Door Handles!
Hi everyone, im on the look out for parts again!
What I am looking for this time is four brand new door handles for my '85 Audi 80. Two of them are on their last legs, one's a little loose, so it just seems logical to replace the lot. Are they easy enough to fit, and to get the barrels from my current ones to new ones? Many thanks in advance, Sie!;) |
I've got these two diagrams if they help. I can't imagine this would be too difficult a job and VAG may still be able to get the parts but no doubt expensively. Maybe they just need taking off and refitting.

People say a lot about how rubbish these door handles are, but if you keep them lubricated, problems are rare. Most breakages are caused by people using too much pressure to open them when they are dry.
So what you mean by 'on their last legs'. I bought a car with seized door handles. A bit of spray lithium grease freed them up a treat and they worked perfectly for years. |
Hi,
Emjay, thanks for the diagram's, they do indeed help! Mike, I have tried to free them up in the past, put grase and libricants on, but as you say, if I take the handles off totally and give it a proper go, I might be able to salvage them. The rear drivers side felt loose when trying to operate it, and I have just taken it off to find out why; The handle mechanism is fine, its the actual bracket of the handle thats broken away. http://www.simonbaskerville1.pwp.blu...k/IMG_1719.jpg http://www.simonbaskerville1.pwp.blu...k/IMG_1721.JPG Right so, that means I need both drivers side handles, because my drivers one seems to be grey! I will leave the passenger side ones until I can have a proper go at them, im putting armour door plates on anyway, so I can do it then. ATB, Sie!;) |
My drivers door one has just done that but it's still attached at present.

Try babington's car spares in leeds simon, i was last in about a month ago, they didn't have any of your shape 80's in but stock does change on a daily basis, they did however have about half a dozen mk2 golfs in if they will fit.

Bad news!
I believe these have been NLA for some years from VAG. I have heard that German & Swedish have sold copies in the past but these are a poor quality when compasred to the genuine article .... so says my friend who bought a couple......that lasted no time at all !! regular dismantling and lubrication is essential. |
Buy some damaged doors from B3, cut out handles with some metal and weld them into your doors. I think, only problem there - UK labour costs :D :D
|
There were Chinese handles available - they are still making Mk2 Golf-based cars. And they aren't actually 'aftermarket' as they are made by VW/Audi in China. I read of someone putting them on a Caoupe.

Thanks for the advice guys!
I cant use B3 door handles!? I like these ones.... all part of the B2 character I love! I think I will go down Bryans route, and try a few scrappers, dont suppose they are the same as the Golf handles does anyone know? I heard once, from somewhere I cant remember, that one of the screw fixings was in a slightly different location, and made them 'not fit properly'? Many thanks, Sie!;) |
