Paint
Hi,
As I am going to be doing some 'Anti-Rust' treatment on the 80, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I can get the paint from? I have previously purchased it from Audi at £12 per (small) tin, but they only have 2 left in the company now, so its on back-order. Apparently it doesnt look like im going to be able to get my hands on anymore. I know Halfords mix paint, im not sure of the costing, but has anyone here used them for paint? I remember Audi's was very light to spray, not sure what theirs will be like. Failing that, is there anywhere else anyone can recommend? Many thanks. Sie!;) |
Hi Simon,
A couple of our local paint supply shops do "custom" aerosols; I have had 'em from Spraystore this year, and Brown brothers (part of Unipart?) used to do them, but may have stopped? AlanB |

I don't trust Halfords to mix paint. I got them to make some up for a vauxhall corsa. It was a white car, and I had the correct paint code. But when I used it, it had a green tint to it. I took it back, and they said they'd try again. But when I saw the state of their paint mixing equipment, I made them give me a refund. They were using the same paper cups for several different colours so it was no wonder it came out wrong. I just chose a nice bright white, got a mercedes colour and it was a perfect match for a cheaper price. Another complaint about Halfords paint (and this time I'm talking about their ready mixed aerosols) is that some of them don't seem to harden out properly, even a few weeks after the paint's been left to dry in the sun. I used their Zinnober red on an old BMW, but when I tried to polish it I noticed it was still soft enough for fingernails to leave dents in it. It's a shame because it was a perfect match. I gave up with their paint and used car plan / tetrosyl. Some car spares shops have a cross reference colour chart and it gave Rover red 14 as the nearest match. It was about 98% perfect so I used it to respray a complete bonnet. I used to work in a branch of Halfords many years ago. We had a catchphrase about the company but it's unrepeatable Quote:

round here I've used Jawel paints.
They will either mix it into a tin or put it in an aerosol for you. they also do on-line ordering! http://www.jawel.co.uk/ |

Or Auto Paints International, I can recomend Telford and they mixed it into aerosols off RAL codes. £8 a can. |

I use hycote concentrated aerosol cans (small black cans) which are just off the shelf product, the only thing is the suppliers are a bit few and far between with most selling car plan "thiners" with hint of colour. I've used the vauxhall flame red in particular, got brilliant match and give it a day or so (depending on conditions) it is able to be wet flated t'cut and even buffed which shows the quality of the product. Prices are the same as most other aerosols. I get it from Maccess on the M606 in bradford but it is trade only.
