20v T into 1981 Coupe GT

Right guys, as I strip down the front of the Gt to perform the full resto, I am pondering on what to put under the bonnet to give me the performance hike I'm looking for.
Initially I was going to go down the full quattro route on the drive train and was considering a V6 from an S4 - but on doing some research and hearing on here somewhere theres only a couple of hundred taxed GT's left in the country!!
This has made me reconsider as chopping up the old girl to fit said drivetrain is going to ruin her originality.:nono:
SSOOooooooo iwas thinking more along the lines of keeping the original 5 pot lump to return to standard if I wished and thinking along the lines of fitting a 20v turbo lump from something VAG/Audi with a bigger turbo for extra giggles.:idea::idea::rock:
Question is has anyone done this yet??
Will the North/south engine layout create any problems??
Should I use existing gearbox??
Would a six speed from Seat CUpra work ?? size issues??
Would the 4 pot engine mounts fit???

Soooo many questions, can someone help by answering a few??:shake::shake::confused:

Yes Tonks has put one in a Cab, which is a similar layout to your GT. Its still front wheel drive, straight swap using original FWD gearbox. Its a Boxster eater!

Thanks Steve, do you or anyone else know whether there is issues with the wiring can I retain the existing dash or do I need to use later gauges etc?
I honestly don't know much about the electrical side of things - I'm hoping it will be a case feeding power to the new engine mangement and use the 20v loom from there??

What do you mean by 20vT???

5 pot out of S2?

Or 4 pot 1.8t from A4, A3'etc?????

Seat gearboxes are transverse so big problems there.

BryFlyinBy 29-06-10 10:09 PM

Sorry Pimpdriver, reading the vw mags they seem to refer to the 1.8t as the 20v turbo, I was following their lead I meant the 1.8t as you suggest.
I was thinking about the Seat box as its 6 speed and FWD - forgetting as you point out its transverse, my bad - any other suggestions???

I know its been done to a CQ on this forum.
In the US a few guys have transplanted turbo motors from early UrQ's or early 200 TQ's ( the 5000 Turbo in the States)

I certainly think I have confused my questions for you guys the engine I am looking at replacing my 5pot for is the 4 cylinder 1.8 turbo engine found in most Audi TT's Seat Cupra's A4's etc..
Not the 5pot S2 engine that has 4 valves per cylinder.
So if anyone has info on this transplant please raise there hands!!!

My understanding of the 1.8t engine is that you get a very unreliable 250-300 bhp out of them.

The 5 pot S2 20vt the sky is the limit depending on the depths of your pocket.

And the S2 engine can be fitted over a weekend. instant 220bhp for 3B engine code and 235bhp for the ABY engine code both of which can be chipped to 270-290 bhp for little money.

HTH

Fair point Tonks, was thinking that maybe the shorter, possibly lighter 1.8t might do better to re-distribute the weight further inboard.
Going with the 5pot S2 I still have a lot of weight over the front and no 4wd to aid the handling.
Plus I was hoping to get a front mounted intercooler behind the grill and still have it looking stock
If someone can tell me that its not going to make a difference on the handling, buggering about fitting the smaller engine then I'll fit the big 5
Thought the newer technology would give me the edge on performance and reliability.???:hmmm:

I haven't done either, but I think 5 pot and 4 pot engine mounts are different (Tonks will be able to confirm) which will require chassis welding.....
