Audi S2 1991 3B changing fuel filter
 

Just a bit of advice needed, looking to change the fuel filter on the Audi S2, I have changed this type of canister fuel filter before but never done the job with fuel in the pipes, sounds a bit daft but normally I change all the pipe work at the same time due to the age of the car and rusty fuel pipes, question is when I remove both banjo bolts on the fuel filter will the fuel in the tank pass through the pump and empty the fuel tank or will I just need tub to catch a few liters of fuel, looking at the fuel filter it looks like a quick unbolt and replace the filter and bolts as quick as you can, any advice will be very helpful.

It will be a dribble Colin. Remember the eye protection! Especially if it’s under pressure. Petrol in the eye is sair (as you may know) Also check diameter of filter. The one I got for the coupe was listed as correct, but diameter was too small for the bracket!

I've taken out a couple of these filters now and they just trickle out so as long as your reasonable quick you'll loose hardly any. :tup:

What is the recommended service life of these filters, does anyone know? :confused: I can't find any reference in my owners manual to it being a service item.
When I recommissioned the rocket ship last summer, I asked for it to be changed by the garage that did all the mechanical stuff but from its appearance this afternoon when I had a shufti it looks like it wasn't as it has the cr*p of ages all round the fittings. :nonod:

I've always done fuel filters at 40k intervals on all my cars regardless of make since the 80's when I owned a 2.8i Capri which had a service interval of 40k miles for the filter so just assumed it was standard practice. (very similar filter to the one fitted to the S2 but easier to do in engine bay)

When I did the 2.6 audi 80 B4 avant quattro fuel filter (same size filter as S2) after I purchased it at 180k miles it looked as if it had been on for several years, the fuel that came out was black (supply side) so it was almost blocked.

Brothers X-type jag has official intervals of 70k miles using one of the push fittings smaller filters similar to more modern audi's.

Can't find any info about that in B3 haynes manual, and I'm too lazy to open bentley manual. In any case, it's likely that manufacturer haven't set any filter change interval, because the main cause for need to change fuel filter is not time or mileage, but cleanliness of the fuel and usage habits; for example doing some offroading in a quattro might end up sloshing up some dirt that had settled at the bottom of the tank...

Good morning all, after seeing the last few reply's to this post I thought I would stick may head in some of my own Haynes manuals, the Audi 100 & A6 manual dose have recommendation of 20,000 miles for replacing the fuel filter, to me this seems a little short in service life as the fuel filter in some Audi's that I have owned have covered 60k to 80k miles with no fuel filter change, see photo below of page from Haynes manual.
