bloody rain, Archie's pissed himself AGAIN
YES he is at it again, as soon as it rains heavily the WR passenger side footwell gets a soaking.
I am REALLY starting to get pissed off with this now, I can only use him 2 days of the year it doesnt rain up here. No move then jokes thanks:finger: checked around the fusebox, its bone dry, carpet coming down from up under the dash is dry, transmission tunnel carpet is dry, behind the glovebox looks dry as well, the screen is dry inside. there is what looks like a split between the fusebox and the top of the heater matrix, along the plenum chamber as I would call it where would this lead to? Also, the black cover isnt exactly in the best of nick either. on the inside of the wing, there is a hole cut out in the wing so I assume this is for drainage..... surely it couldnt be getting in here could it? I re-sealed the hole for the bonnet cable release so its not coming in from there. Anyone got some good ideas please because I am at my whits end having to bail him out when he gets wet. thanks:tup: |
the big holes in the inner wings are for drainage rich, just keep em clear of leaves. My white one did the same as yours and i tracked it down to the windscreen, it had a new screen and rubber put in and cured it so the screen rubber may have moved or been put in badly on mine...just a thought as i checked the usual bonnet pull routing etc
|
Get inside and have someone spray the car on firts the left side front and then the right side.
Get a good torch to have a look under the dash with and see if you can locate it that way. |
Move somewhere drier...:halo:
|
Did you ever sort out the door membranes?
|
hi m8 hope you sort it asap ,poor archie if you said i had a spare black cover a new one which one of the audi quattros guys has yet to pay for it yet try door seals too i got a door seal and a fuse box if you want them there yours ok m8
|
thanks Folks.
Gabriel I'll relieve you of the black plastic thing that covers the matrix please. Screen.... the screen was removed during prior body repairs. It looks well sealed, the door membrane on the drivers door was supposed to have been replaced when they did the door window mec. Apparently the plastic membrane doesnt keep water out.... its part of soundproofing:hmmm::hmmm::hmmm:!!!!! its just the amount of water getting in, when i push my fingers into the carpet it reaches my first knuckle:yikes: no leaves, birds nest under my bonnet but I cant see inside the drain hole to see if its been disturbed during body repairs. Water ingress is a TW*T because it could be anywhere and not where you think it would be coming from:mad::mad::mad::grr::grr::grr: where's my eductor? |

Have you checked?? I have heard of this being a problem leading to water ingress. I wouldn't take the words of a garage at face value tbh |

it was parked nose down in the drive if this gives a clue. I wondered if it a sunroof drain issue? so thats 3 Audi's NEEDING fettling. 1) Archie wants to join the submarine service!!!! 2) RS4 has shreaded a front tyre..... awaiting 2 new to arrive this weekend, because its such a low profile (255/35/18's) its dificult to tell if it needs pumped up, soon found out when I went over a cats eye!!!!!!!! tyre on the inside has been worn down to nearly bald and the wires coming through! 3) cabrio has a warped passenger side front disc and possibly a knackered drop link so thats back at the dealers again!! Helen is using the Aygo.... I think I'll get one, it hasnt gone wrong in 56k miles. got 30k miles from last set of tyres as well.35 quid a tank from empty and does nearly 450 miles on a tank with a light foot. 35 quid road tax...... see where I am going on this. SELL THE AUDIS and get a noddy car :):):) I'll have dry feet and a few quid left in my pocket:):) ok, spoken to body shop, taking Archie in this afternoon, go home and swap wheels on the RS.... THANKS Mum :) She'll follow me to body shop then take me home:) |
.
Know absolutely nich about Type 85s matey, but may I suggest your door seals??
Had a real bad one on the 480 and tried sunroof drains and all places bulkhead ! Nien, turned oot to be a humble door johnny! Oh,and dont forget the golden rule for keeping a classic.... LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!! :finger::nod: |
not wanting to sound like a stuck record but looking ok is different to a watertight seal, door seals may cause an issue but if your screen has not been seated correctly it will leak, mine did when parked in a certain way and that looked ok.......:wierdo:
|
.
Stop disagreeing bitch:p
Well,in the words of Edd China,"Enlist the help of an assistant". Sit inside the car, having your partner or another human hold a hose over it. Its what bodyshops do! |
hi my audi 200 qt had the same problem new front screen fitted water on passenger side carpet . soaked, looked everwhere no where else was wet. put more screen seal around the glass and rubber. now ok no more leaks. Bart.
|
Mine leaks in the same place but only tends to make the glove box wet ,more of a problem is the water leak into the boot i had an iinch deep puddle in top tray of my tool box the other day

THANKS GENTS. At least the body shop can get the seat and carpet out and dry it off much easier than I can with thier water hoover and dry ing out bay. Oh i have a small leak in the boot as well.... was coming in at the tail light, drivers side, thought I got it with black silicon sealant... now its down to a 50p coin size puddle:confused::confused: no rush to get him back, got there with 1 gallon showing in the tank... if they wanna mid night cruise him they can fuel it:lol::lol: |
You don't want silicone on the rear lights Rich, you want some proper dum dum , if the bodyshop don't use it they are not very good, can get you some
|
I cant get the lens off because the black stuff its stuck on with has such a grip on it the glass will break.
I have pointed them in that direction as well JJ so see what they find. seriously the amount of water in the passenger side wouldnt be that much if i left the bloody door open in the monsoon we had on Sunday!! time will tell and at least the floor will get dried off properly. thanks for your offer though bud:tup: |
A heat gun and it will slowly release, a pain but it will release....if they don't know that take archie elsewhere...honest!
|
possibly the windscreen seal matey, mine used to leak until i took it out and cleaned it...it was full of crap.
|
Removal tip for the rear lights- Warm the mounting flange from inside the boot to get the seal to release.
Much more effective than heating the light unit. :) |
That's how I do it and the push the rear of the light with a block of wood
|
update:
bodyshop just called.. found 2 BIG leaks so far:yikes: 1) sunroof drain hose (passenger side) has shrunk and come off its exit pipe so running striaght into the car:hand: 2) door apature seal wasnt sealed very well... I said about the rear tail light so He'll have a look. stripped out seat and carpet so thats dried off. The under lay sound proofing is f***** so he has removed it all and will replace with new material. windscreen seal is good, no probs there.... PHEEWW!! didnt really want that disturbed. so far so good then... progress in the right direction:tup: |
Here's a thought...
Why don't you take the sunroof out, close all the doors, windows, airvents etc and then fill it up with water from the local fire hydrant, to the sunroof level... You'll be able to walk all round the outside identifying any leaks without the discomfort of sitting in the car for hours watching for the odd tiddle... Hope this helps... Very best regards... Ian |
your idea isnt far off the situation I was in yesterday driving to TO the bodyshop mate!!!!!
thanks for your compassionate post Ian...... I know you care:tup::lol: |

But then I thought, nope, you’ll be fine, you’re a trained diver… And there are bound to be airpockets up under the dash somewhere if you fall in. |

Hi Rich, I know we keep on about them, but are you sure the door membranes are good. They really do prevent the water that runs down the window glass from getting to the back of the doorcard (which is inside of the door rubbers)...
Also, check the door rubbers are good, and tight, especially at the lower part of the A pillars, there's a bit of trim that sits down there, lips behind the rubber... These bits... http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...SCN2803mod.jpg Any rain that runs along the wing as you drive, is pushed into the A post/Door gap and blown onto the rubber. If the rubber is even slightly raised, it'll get in, and drip down onto the carpet where these two pieces of trim are. VBR Ian |
the body guy mentioned it was coming in here so Id say its covered. Will mention the door cards to him again:ihih:
|
another update:
called in today to see the chap doing the work. He has found a few big leaks, (Simmo, the membrane on oassenger side door was replaced) ok.... the door apature seal wasnt sealed as it should so its been re sealed properly. 2) the sunroof drain hose at the sunroof end id 100% fine 3) the other end wasnt exiting the sill,it was going into the sill then into the footwell 4) the wing edge when the door is closed is water tight all the way up until about 3 inches from the top of the wing/ door gap, then water was coming in, further investingation revealed there IS a hole about the size of a 10 coin at the A pillar where the door closes onto the edge of the wing, 5) the windscreen is 100% watertight BUT the thin gap between the wing and the windscreen surround IS letting water in. I suggested running a sealant into that panel gap and prevent water getting in, so thats what he will do. 6) on the inside behind the plastic trim Simmo shows in his post above, this is where the water is coming in so thats also been sealed as well, the drain hose from the sunroof wasnt exiting but going into the sill then out under the car/ some of it INTO the car. 7) rear light cluster is still to be addressed but because its been soaked numerous times, I have a little puddle in the drivers side rescess in the boot. Drivers side is the same as passengers so at least we have sourced all the water ingress points now. no hurry to get car back, so probably next weekend.... |
glad its been sorted my friend hopefully archie will be dry soon
|
he's in the workshop and dried out,the undercarpetsound proofing is well and truely knackered so its being replaced with some new substitute material.
cheers Gabriel for your support:D |
send photos when she back on the road, and put a cover over her soon m8
