Guage readings

Picking up my 80 sport next week and was wondering what the oil pressure guage should be reading. At idle it was around 1 and on fast idle, around 1500-2000, was just below 5. Does this sound about right?
Thanks, Phil .

On my 1.9 5 pot the guage reads about 2 and a half bar when fully warmed at idle then goes off scale when driven (which I assume is ok).

However when I put the heater fan on full speed the oil temp guage rises and pressure guages drop considerabley. I guess there is a voltage drop somewhere but it did freak me out last week when I put the fan on to cool me down a bit then panicked cos I though the engine was about to overheat/run out of oil :yikes:

that sounds good as long as have over 2bar at 2000rpm your good

PhilGee 14-08-09 08:12 PM

Phew, started to panic a bit

Seemed to run ok anyways, but did have a bit of an oil leak from the cam cover gasket. 1st of many jobs to be done

vag80 14-08-09 08:15 PM

if it's an 8 valve thats normal change the rockercover gasket to a rubber one that'll stop it

Engine oil of 1 bar at idles nothing to be concerned about as the engines not under any load, if however that situation was occuring at revs and load then id be worried, but yours sounds good to me.

mine always sits at around 3.5 at idle and then off the scale at any rev. but i always wondered about my oil temp. it never moves only slightly above 60, im guessing its not working?

...but it's absolute minimum. My 3A iddling @ 1-1,1k [MAF potentiometr gone as usual] had something about 2 bar and 5k about 1,8 when fully warmed up. With worned out main bearings @ iddle were 1 bar.

What shows voltmeter in that moment?
If there would be not enough oil in engine [and that's about 1 liter below minimum!], pressure would fluctuate :)

the voltmeter drops too, less than 11 volts on a healthy 12 volt new battery.

W...w....what? Engine is running but u have 11 volts? :yikes: How much is when your fan isn't running then?

Emjay 15-08-09 07:59 PM

when the fan is off then I have a good healthy 12 to 13 volts, good oil pressure and temp. When the fan is set at speed 1 or 2 then all is OK but when I select the speed 3 then the oil pressure and voltage guages drop and the oil temp goes up. It's a definate step change. I am not too worried, it's just a characteristic of the car

msh 15-08-09 08:04 PM

"healty 12-13v"  It isn't "characteristic of the car", it is dying alternator. Heatly is 14-14,5v. Check that your voltmeter shows what is really happening there [my volltmeter, for example, shows 0,5v below voltage on battery, I don't know, is that voltage drop in wiring harness or voltmeter error].

Emjay 15-08-09 08:19 PM

for the less than 3 thousand miles a year she does, in the daytime and dry, I am happy with 12 to 13 volts :lol: As long as she goes, stops and everything works, thats fine by me for now

msh 15-08-09 08:26 PM

Yeah, and once u will stop somewhere in the middle of the road just because alternator will stop working at all so battery will discharge and ignition will not run...
U have only one problem - nice prices to change some parts. I replaced 4 parts that wears out in alternator by spending some 6 lvl [about 8 pounds] for parts - but because I had access to hydraulic press and pneumatic pistol, without them it's impossible. Just check real voltage, alternator bearings and voltage regulator - by yourself, of course. If it's only voltage regulator, it will cost u much much less than trailer.

Emjay 15-08-09 08:33 PM

I have recovery included in my insurance so no worries about stopping somewhere and paying a trailer fee :moon:

Seriously though, the advice is appreciated and to be sure I will check her our when I am next under the bonnet

msh 15-08-09 08:34 PM

I hope u know how to do it.

Emjay 15-08-09 08:36 PM

she goes into the garage in a couple of weeks for a service and tune so I'll get her checked then

msh 17-08-09 06:29 PM

I especially for Emjay today took this photo :) Well, that's healty voltage - gauge shows correctly, there is only 0,25v drop in on board electrics, on battery is slightly above 14v.

They're the wrong way round
(i know, its a left hooker)

Emjay 17-08-09 08:30 PM

thanks MSH, mine does read a bit lower so will get it checked out

poopcoupe 18-08-09 06:00 AM

Can I join the party... I have a healthy 12 - 13 v all the time. My oil pressure always reads 5 no matter what is going on?

msh 18-08-09 09:07 AM

Oil pressure always 5 bar, also when engine isn't running and just ignition turned on?
For voltage - check alternator. Probably worn out brushes but bearings may be gone as well. Are u going to some garage or u will check yourself? :D
