BMW 635 coupe

i've been thinking of being 'unfaithful' to the coupe quattro last few days..

& I've been considering a few cars i'd quite like to have as a bit on the side.. :ihih:

A Nissan 300ZX twin turbo for one, :D

but more prominently i've been lusting after an old BMW 635 coupe, having always had a 'thing' for them for quite some time.

Most of my m8s would like me to get the 300zx, and i can see why  as its the closest someone like little ol me is ever going to come to owning a 'super-car', but at the moment, a part of me is more drawn to the beemer as it would be much more 'unusual' and a rarer sight on the roads.

I always like to be different in my choice of car, and just like with the CQ its nice to know i'm behind the wheel of something no one else has got.. and that i'm not likely to see another identical carbon copy of it coming the other way every 5 minuets thru :finger:. :moon:

I was thinking of one in white? similar to this maybe?
What you think? opinions please.. :) Also, i don't really know anything about this these cars, so any info would be much appreciated. thanks.

nice car i had one a few years back 86 model henna red the later the car the better .m6 is the one but pricey. kick down and she flies. also the best seats i have ever sat in recaros no back aches. should have kept it sold it for 4000 to a bmw mechanic. just watch the front wings on these prone to rusting and filler. i also am looking for something else at moment my audi 200 q turbo been off the road 4 months now will not start , up at Bens at avperformance. best of luck. Bart.

ahh, that's my old Alpina B9. Love them, real 80's pimp!!!

And unlike Audi, parts are still available on the whole. And the price for them wasn't bad either! They do have a habit of rusting so tread carefully!

Micky 24-07-09 07:01 AM

Understatement of the year! :yikes:

Rust on an E24 is not something which might come if you don't look after it. It's going to happen whatever you do - even if you take it into your home at night, let it sleep in front of the fire, and fondle its nether regions daily with a soft fluffy cloth. These things were designed in the same era as the MkIII Cortina and the similarities don't end there.

After a huge (£14k) restoration in 2002, my E24 is still lucky to even come close to the condition of my original, untouched 20v quattro RR. It's never been as good as the shell of my WR which was out of its bodywork warranty by the time my 635 was hatched.

Trade an Audi Coupe for a 635. :nono:

BTW, the white one in the pictures above is all wrong. Step away from the vehicle. Walk away now. :wierdo:

Get a 635i the M30 engine is fantastic easy to work on etc. Watch out for cracked cyclinder heads they are a pain in the ass.
I had a M30 in my E30 it was great, tonnes of power  I like the old 6 series as well its got this majestic look to it. I also like the E28 5 series, you can get that in a 535i as well. They are very juicy though.

300zx is a nightmare to work on, just look inside the engine bay and imagine trying to fix anything on that! Also parts are expensive, another juicy choice.

istoo 24-07-09 07:47 AM

i know of an M535i in need of restoration in NE scotland. Body shell needs a LOT of work the engine runs sweet. its the dog legged gear box as well.

My brother is tempted to buy it for a transplant to his E30 touring, he got the E30 but swapping for his 90 2.0 five pot last year.

LYT4X 24-07-09 08:01 AM

M30 is a brilliant engine. Problem is the metal work that was built around it.

Unfortunatley, I think Iain's quote sums up most of these motors:

i had a great g reg 535i sport in light blue mettllic really great car manuel gearbox with only 103,000 miles on her great powerful car top speed well over 145mph ,put a sport stainless exhaust on her sold 2 year ago for £1,200, with a year mot well worth it no rust and great handing car with plenty supply of parts so go for a 535i sport with manuel box ten out of 10 car better and more reliable then most audi i had sorry to say guys, i big mistake i sold her, also it had full blue leather seats

Love these cars, My uncle had the M6 version with every toy imaginable and sounded great, but he admits his affection for the noise and performance meant low teens mpg...Ouch! Now retired and has gone back to his classic cars... Think he still has a Morris 8 (used as our wedding car) and an Alvis 6 cylinder soft top from early 60's..

Was the Ur you purchased the first full on Audi machine you bought?
Did this sacrifice, of arguably one of the most BMW's ever made, led directly to the formation of the Classic Forum?

ZermattGT 24-07-09 08:57 PM

You're ahead of me. The Swedish Rally Rep. Tough decision. Mmmmmmm.
If I already owned a great Audi, I don't believe I could part with the B9.
Of course the Alpina cars are much rarer in the States.

no, the first full on Audi machine we bought was the RS2. Gotta start somewhere!
The Sanyo quattro I bought off Nigel Conniford off here about 8 months ago or so which I bought 2 days after selling the B9.

The BMW was kind of one of those "must own one day" cars and got it in a swap a few years ago. Spent about 6 months re-commissioning it as it had been stored for 5 years, then sold it on to an Oil dealer from Azerbaijan!! 1 of 18 RHD B9 Alpina's of which only 4 are still on the road in the UK. I'd had my fun with it and wanted a C2 2.7 E30 and a real mint one had come up for sale. Was going to go and see it on the Saturday but Nige put his quattro up for sale on the Thursday evening and I ddn't get much sleep that night thinking about what to do!! Heart ruled head!!!! Good choice though I reckon!!!

ZermattGT 24-07-09 09:05 PM

Any pics of the C2?

never saved any of them. Did have a few on email but have deleted them. :(

I lost some sleep last year when this B6 was for sale. Close to 30 thousand USD.
Hands down one of the pinnacles of small high performance sedans.

Ah, the 2.8 straight 6 beast. Verrry rare!

LYT4X 24-07-09 10:26 PM

Coxy - If it's any consolation I've said before that I would have had Nigels Sanyo car over many other ur's out there which may have been twice the price. I'd happilly give-up my E24 for that.

is the rust issue, better or worse than that of a ford capri?

Also, don't worry! I wasn't planing on trading in the audi for it.. was gonna keep both. I throw away nothing! :D lol

But what exactly is so wrong with the white one? :( Looks pretty damn clean and cool to me..

Firstly the wheels are just wrong. Plain wrong and nothing else for it. Then there's the smoked windows. I mean, if you want to look like a pimp, smoke dem windows and run on BAD wheels man. Next, there's the wannabe Alpina badge on the front grille the horrid side skirts, the half-hearted de-chroming effort and...... and......... IT'S JUST WRONG.:shake:

Is the de-chroming and tints part of the shadowline trim though?

LYT4X 25-07-09 11:28 AM

I thought shadowline was just BM-Speak for de-chroming but those windows are smoked - not tinted. That's a drug-dealing pimpmobile for sure.

ZermattGT 25-07-09 11:31 AM

Yes, but a very classy drug dealing pimp mobile. Testify.

ZermattGT 25-07-09 11:40 AM

We used to have US television series callled "Spencer for Hire", based on a detective/mystery series of books. Robert Urich played Spencer, and drove a 1968-69 Ford Mustang, very Bullit like. His friend in the underword Hawk, played by the head shaven Avery Brooks ( Deep Space Nine) drove a whited out 635csi.

Could not find any pics to link to his BMW.
Very late 80's
Cool show.
