quattro is good but.....

When lorries get stuck up the hills it is useless!

Got 8 miles in 30 minutes today then lorries were stuck on the hills.

Turned round and went home, as I normally have 48 miles each way to go.

Still, the diff lock was useful for turning round in the middle of the road and not getting stuck.

Coxy 05-02-09 08:48 AM

leaving in about 40 minutes. Roads by us ain't good at all.
12 of my drivers have had to knock it on the head today, which is always good for business :shake:

ah well, kettle on, feet up then.

Coxy 05-02-09 08:54 AM

I blame your council Steve!

Salt mismanagement at it's best!

Isimmo 05-02-09 09:39 AM

Well, they have had to pay for 16 public inquiries into the proposed A303 tunnel under Stone Henge, and the all new Portaloo/Portacabin visitor centre...

Stone Henge hasn't been voted the No1 'most disappointing' visitor attraction for 3 years on the trot for nothing, it takes investment to be that consistently bad.

steveb 05-02-09 11:03 AM

200 avant + snow+ no grit = :D:D 06 30 today

PeterB 05-02-09 11:29 AM

quattro will overcome most situations, but 4x0 is still 0.
Mine hasn't been out at all in this weather :(, too much salt and what with all the plebs on the road, it's just not worth it.
Range Rover time then!

steveb 05-02-09 11:31 AM

The ur is safley undercover avoiding the salt, using the 200 as it's galvenised

PeterB 05-02-09 11:32 AM

Sorry guys, im one of the offending lorry drivers!

Stuck on the A14 for 6 hours this morning after a truck up ahead jack-knifed and caused everyone to come to a halt on a hill. We all got stuck, several hundred of us!

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1.../A14STUCK1.jpg

Found time to make this fella though...

Later MURDERED by the traffic cops. Apparently snowmen arnt allowed in lane 2 of the A14.

Where did you get that nose from????

Lankytim 05-02-09 10:16 PM

I had a collection out of Braintree, Essex. I got sent back to the M1 and went down to the M10 and across that way. Pain in the bottom.

I was booked in for 8AM but got there at 2.30PM!

I got stuck just before J1 of the A14, but I know it was blocked at several other places further along.

The "nose" is a flashing yellow roadworks light!

Coxy 05-02-09 10:33 PM

that must bugger up your driving hours does it?

Sorry.

I know you do a hard job in all weathers. Didn't mean to have a go at just lorry drivers.

Anyone without quattro basically.

I did manage to make an igloo though.

Coxy 06-02-09 08:40 AM

Damn you Steve, you've got mighty fine igloo making skills fella. Are you an eskimo in disguise in cycling shorts?!?!?!

Actually they are not cycling shorts, just regular "Dickies" shorts covering up the cycling tights underneath (waterproof, and warm).

Notice the crocs, with Goretex socks???

I have these ones (which leak slightly, being at least 10 years old)
http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/sh...rt-324591.html

But I would like these for mountain biking. Totally waterproof up to 18 inches. Wade through streams easily.

Coxy 06-02-09 09:00 AM

sorry Steve, but I get worried when I see men in Crocs!!!!:hand:

Nothing about men in tights then? That's OK then!

Unless you have tried Crocs don't knock them.

But then you are past 40.

Well my mum, dad, mum in law, dad in law all have them.

Coxy 06-02-09 09:12 AM

I weren't going to bring the tights into it!!!!!!!!:p

4v6 06-02-09 09:23 AM

I want a photo of him inside the igloo..... like stuffing a pint into a half pint glass... :D

It did a bit, but not as much as youd have thought. The 6 hours spent sat on the A14 were classed as "period of availiability" I.E not a break, not work but "available for work" They didnt affect the amount of hours I could drive. The other way I went wasnt that much further time wise so it worked out ok.

gabriel.oconnell 06-02-09 06:11 PM

totally stuck today had to use the quattro in the snow ,cannot wait for the warmer weather to give the car a good wash ,to get rid of the salt and crap

Scarlet 06-02-09 06:36 PM

Anyone remember the "dont try to catch a quattro in the snow" tag ? using them is a bit like an affair, you know you shouldnt, but, it's soo good !

steveb 06-02-09 07:24 PM

certianly true today only lost grip if i *accidently* put my foot down a little hard :D

kully 06-02-09 07:26 PM

Is it me or are the new quattro cars not as good as the old quattro cars of the 80s and 90s because i drove an s3 over the last cuople of days but found it not to grip as well even with the traction control switched off as good as my 80 quattro (that was before the rebuild it was driven in the snow)

steveb 06-02-09 07:29 PM

one reason may be most of them have much wider tyres now so they don't cut into the snow / slush as well, the wider tyre tends to sit on top giving you less grip

Martc 06-02-09 07:29 PM

Tyres are wider on newer cars, also S3 uses the haldex (VW system) rather than Audi 'quattro' 4x4 system

aka "gay quattro"

darreno'd' 06-02-09 07:42 PM

Which means most of the time it's front wheel drive...

Booty 06-02-09 08:09 PM

The S6 is ok in the snow but really seems to be steered by the arse end. Tyres are I'm sure an issue, 255/40/17 are not ideal winter tyres. Turning of the roundabout at work and the car just wants to go straight on, so......give it a quick blip turn in and another slightly bigger blip and the nose turns in where you need. But she's a big heavy girl and care is needed!!!!!

darreno'd' 06-02-09 08:27 PM

My van was a bit arse endy today, so much so that i turned it round purely on the throttle when i got home, that should raise my standing with the neighbours......

kully 06-02-09 08:29 PM

It seems as the computers in the new cars ruin proper four wheel drive
