What the hell is the point of these things??!

both gene and susie2 have these contraptions fitted and all i can figure out about them is that they cause the wiper on that side to judder like a corpie bus at buchanan street bus station....totally pointless and really infuriating!!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../DSCF0028v.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...y/DSCF0031.jpg

why on earth did mother audi ever think that they were a great idea??!

BIGGYIN 26-08-13 10:11 PM

All my 90q's,had them.

They are there,to keep the blades pushed against the glass.Don't know the difference,if they weren't there??Never, tried.

Hanuman 26-08-13 10:44 PM

Allegedly judder @ high speed?

good wiper/arm, no aerofool* bit, judder
bad wiper, old, worn. judder

real world- haven't really been impressed with quatty wipers anyway

*spelling deliberate

geneandbolly 26-08-13 11:19 PM

not so bad at low speed but once you've experienced high speed judder, it would seem that the blades become buggered and then judder all the time thereafter!

if they were such a good idea, why did mother only put them on the driver's side??

:wierdo:

msh 26-08-13 11:56 PM

As a cost saving measure, I guess. After all, the car is supposed to be driven on road, not in rally, so poorer visibility for passenger shouldn't be a problem.

My A90q had shitty aftermarket blade there, god only knows why, but in any case I'm sure it didn't what it should - once had the chance to drive @ ~ 170 kmph in rain and wind blew upper part of windshield clean while kept water on lower part of windshield. A couple of months ago fitted original one, who knows when I will have the chance to test it :D

Darron Edwards 27-08-13 12:00 AM

Judder is caused by deformation of the blade, which is a result of it being at rest for a long time. The blade leans against the motion of the arm and skips, causing the judder. To rectify the judder, fit a new blade.

darreno'd' 27-08-13 03:35 AM

You can flex the wiper blades to reduce the judder, if it Huddersfield on the way up the windscreen, try turning the wiper toward the windscreen, if it judder on the way down, try turning the wiper away. Two handed grip on the wiper blade and a slow flex to get a little bend in the arm is what you need.

my theory was that the "aerofoil" causes too much pressure on the blade and it's this pressure that causes the judder. the passenger side blade has the same life at rest as the aero blade but doesn't judder at all. i have removed this device on the 90 quattro and should get a chance to test it out soon as rain is looming overhead.

thanks for your suggestions and ideas, folks!

:yikes: serious modification....you'll be adding more spokes to your wheels next
If the blade is at 90 degrees to the screen and the rubber is in good condition then there's no reason for the thing to judder.......blades are often overlooked untill they split/fail an MOT. Have you ever replaced them?

:lol::lol::lol:

yes, i've changed them - are you insinuating that i'm a miserable sod?! :hand:

i found that they were great when brand new and then a few weeks at the hands of
the dreaded aero device, the driver's side wiper was buggered again! it's the same on both cars so one can only deduce that 'tis said device that's to blame!

anyway, new blade on gene today, it pished all the way home and a lovely silent wiping action to be had!

In fact if you apply it to a clean screen once a week you don't even need wipers

Still, I fitted RS6 wiper arms to my coupe and they are silent as a mouse and don't judder even well into treble figures :ihih:

rainx eats the wiper rubbers.

Error404 08-09-13 12:36 AM

Any science behind that? :)

Only that I bought a brand new van in 93, used rain-x on it, then every few months it needed blades, they were rotting along the edge and leaving streaks, this is brand new wipers mind. I continued using rain-x and after 1 year it had gone through 3 or 4 sets of blades.

The mechanic suggested stopping the use of rain-x as he had seen this before and suspected it was the chemicals in the formula, I did stop and used isopropyl to clean the glass and the next set of wipers lasted a year. Same brand (bosch) from same place.

Just my own experience, nothing more.

Error404 08-09-13 04:15 PM

Fair enough, I've never had any problems with it, but I don't use my car much so maybe that has something to do with it :)

Craig if yours work anything like these at 125mph then get them removed because they are pretty useless on these DAF supplied wiper arms.
I mean truck wipers on a high speed train, how cheap is that! :shake:

When was the last time you seen a truck doing 125?

SKOOSHERS.

Don't know about yours craig but on my Ur when you use the Skooshers you end up soaking about the next seven following cars they are that powerful,
...and they work whether the lights are on or not.

I think virgin cut back on the options.

or DER SKOOSHERS, i think was the official audi terminology!

yes, the quattro is the first car i've had with them and imagine my dismay when bolly
and i went to buy it and it was "crying" out of one of them as it sat there ready to be sold on!! anyway, it wasn't long before the pinkish paint was replaced and lucky me to find stevie at dalry coachworks, who is also an audi fanatic who fixed it when the car was in for some paintwork! you should see the size of the tubing leading to the skooshers - it's like a garden hose!! no wonder those in your wake get drenched!! mind are strictly a "headlamps on" affair and like to make a mess of my windscreen just to know that the headlamp skooshers are doing there thing, should an oncoming skoosher fan be watching!!

:D

actually, now i'm on a roll, here are some of my favourite headlamp wash/ wipe systems (gawd help us!) - i can vividly remember going to the scottish car show in the kelvin hall in glasgow in the 70s and early 80s and being mesmerised at the thought of such devices. and yes, i've always been easily pleased too..

and my personal favourite out of the lot, as seen on the 635csi - how on earth did they make that lot work in unison??!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...635-csi-03.jpg

actually, i might ask for a part exchange on the quattro for that one!!

You bellowed?

To satisfy your curiosity, I could go all ano-rakish, and bombard you with photos of the various travesties we laughingly call wipers.
Or
I could just taunt you.

Taunting it is...

FYI. if we did have mini spoilers on our wipers, i'm sure they would fall off (or be launched) on first application. Seriously, you cannot imagine the the comic effect!

I'm the same, don't use it much but then I don't use the wipers as much 'cause the screen's RainX'd
