Edit... Just been checking the web, it wasn't a formal recall... |
My car (1998 S4) has had new heat shields. It/They had been mangled on the left side to keep in place.
The manifolds also seem to have had issues. Another bit replaced. If not done, they seem to take out the lambda sensors on their way to the turbo. And it's all a minimal working space. The likes of Grizz and Ben will probably shed more light. I've not been about to do any work on mine to get to know it, so my knowledge is based on info from others. |
And the cambelt recently done, not nice on them
|
hi Dom,
check on audisrs.com forum/ rs246.com also try and get it health checked by either Grizz ( Unit 20) http://www.unit20.org/ ( Cheshire) he specialises in S snd RS models and he is dam good, I go to him from up here:tup: also if its nearer to you then try MRC Tuning ( Banbury) http://www.mrctuning.com/ also highly specialised people who know these cars. Get it checked out first then you should be safe with your purchase... I was out last night and had a wee drive of a 550bhp S4 saloon.... I'll tell ya......... YOU WANT IT LIKE THIS ONE:D:D:D:tup: turbos have been known to cause issues and also possibly cam shafts, I know theyre a hit and miss on the B5 RS4's so advise to get them looked at as well just to be safe. good luck:tup: |
ask "andy e" on here, he has one, but I don't know if he is selling it.
|
If you want any help or advise on looking for an S4 (brilliant car by the way) I'd be happy to send you any info you want. I do alot of these. Great car but a few common faults to keep ya eye on.
The heat shields were a problem on early models, usually the ones that still had single hole injectors (which were an issue too). The heat shields needed replacing with modified units and req'd engine removal to fit properly! Under bonnet temperature were the biggest plague for designers with the S4 engine so be sure no one's just hackem em off!! A few faults are: -Poor injectors cause carbon balls to build up under the exhaust valves and valve burn out. -Throttle body boots split -Charge control system non return valves fail -Boost leaks on intercooler pipework -Non pressurised air leak on feed pipes to turbo -Oil pump pick up gauze blocking - Causes blockage to cams and variators -Ingress of air on inlet manifold causing poor fuelling at trailing throttle and boost leak under load -Poor quality fuel and crap remaps - AVOID!!!! -Cylinder heads can crack -N245 (ReCirc valve charge regulation valve) fails -Split reCirc Valves (MUST not have atmospheric dump valves fitted!!!) -Obvious things like air mass meters -Dash pods fail on DIS (like most B5's) Rear Diff' leaks -Top, front suspension arms ball joints fail -Lower front bearing arm ball joints go (£130 an arm!!) There's a fair bit to check for but a good one is a BRILLIANT and very underrated car. I would (and did) have one of these over an RS4. With a GOOD remap they have almost no lag and huge torque. Althought they have less grip than an RS4 ultimately, they handle better in my opinion and respond more quickly to inputs (on the road atleast...) |
Check it gets up to and stays at temp when driving too, as changing the stat means doing the cambelt too!
|
Thanks everyone, sounds like there's alot that can go wrong or will go wrong! Parts, whats the score same as all audi's. My A4 Avant aint cheap for anything but not really bad. Also Ben the car im looking at is in shropshire, would you be willing to meet me there and give it the once over and of course I will pay for you time and Petrol? Dom

Mate, its a monster! It would be like driving a oiltanker!!! Stick to original plan:lol:
|
Looks more like something a pimp ordrug dealer would drive tbh!
|
Dont forgot that with an S4 you need to tow a tanker to keep it running

Yeah, it is "a little" worse, you could say, probably more like twice as bad :hand: I thought the S2 was bad, but the S4 is in the next league again :D |

No thanks, I live in the countyside, not west London :p
|
stick tdi badges on it
She'll never know:rock: |
My S4 isn't that bad, unless having lots of fun. Which is nigh on impossible here, mostly.
|
Mine averaged 19mpg, which was a mix of all types of driving.
But it was all too easy to get it down to 10-12! |
Benster said you could get 30 if driven carefully I think.
|
I could get 30, but only if you literally drove like a saint; that means light on the power and early changes at ALL times and driving at 50mph.
If you think an S4 is going to do 30mpg most of the time you are going to be very disapointed. |
I'd be happy to check it over mate.
I got average of 27 out of the one I had, upto 32 on a run. That had revo, full Milltek with high flow cats. Worts average I got was about 22-23 when being enthusiastic. |

Whoever decided on that interior was on a crack pipe. Quote Mr A Cox!
The whole car looks like Ali G in da house!! :finger:Coxy Baby!! |

In that case, tell the missus the turbos are shite, and its a must that you fit K04's to give some reliability   |

Mines a hoot. And docile as you want when cruising. 28-31mpg at a steady reasonable speed. I can get it lower when i have some fun. One of the best cars I have ever had.
|
|
Cos they are Recaros, not the standard sports seats.
|
Was that an option?
|
Yep, rare/expensive upgrade, they are either the same or veyr similar to RS4 ones, I think quite afew facelift cars had them too

The one with different seats?
Looks good in the pics, mileage is ok. Its pretty close to MRC in Banbury, Id ring and ask if they would be happy to let you get it health checked by them (at your cost of course) just to check its all ok. All they do is check for boost leaks, vagcom it for any fault codes and make sure its all ok in general. It could save you a fortune! They should have no reason to turn it down |
