Hi, just a further thought on the misfire or lack of power, the 2.6 B4 avant quattro I owned few years ago had a similar flat spot which I eventually traced to the inlet manifold.
The 2.6 does not have the variable length manifold like the 2.8 but a simplier version made out of plastic which is made in 2 halves bolted together with several torx (from memory) small diameter bolts. Its whats inside that caused my problem, when I split the manifold by removing the top half after taking out all the small diameter torx bolts the full horror was revealed. Inside was the remains of a plastic flow guide which had seperated and several of the plastic bits (they are made of a yellow plastic) had become jamed within the inlet tracts effectively partially blocking the airflow to maybe 4 of the 6 ports. There is also a plastic rectangle bit (looks like half a brick) in the bottom half of the manifold presumably to aid the airflow within the chamber by making it smaller possibly to aid low speed torque. Any hows I removed the plastic brick part and the remains of the guide and pieces blocking the inlet tracts and put it back together, immediate improvement in pick up was apparent. The car was about 20 years old at the time so I'm betting that your cars manifold guide parts are broken and some of the inlet tracts are partially blocked. Worth a look any how if you have a couple of hours to spare. |

Could it be the coil pack? Not changed that yet. I had a new one in my hands, but it turned out to be the wrong part, so it was sent back. Not thought about the MAF....mmmm Terracleaned???? Thanks for the article upload. Going to go have a read of it now. Cheers  |

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply with this. It sounds almost unbelievable that a manufacturer such as Audi would allow an engine to go into production with such a weak area of design. Surely the engine designers would have had concerns about the longevity of the use of plastic in these areas. This does feel like the possible culprit though. Not for the (now very slight) misfire, but the apparent lack of torque at low revs. It does feel like the engine is being 'held back' or 'strangled'....a bit like you would expect if you moved off with the handbrake tightly applied (which it's not by the way!:hand:). Do you even know if these plastic parts are still available from Audi? Bit of a nightmare I'd imagine if they're not! Actually...while on the subject of doing repairs to the 2.6 ABC engine, or even the B4 in general, what do you guys use for a workshop manual? I really miss having a Haynes for this car. Your excellent visual description of the problem with the plastic parts is much appreciated, but when it comes to actually stripping the bits down and rebuilding, even identifying what's what to an extent, I need a manual of some description. The more detailed the better. In the meantime, I will keep this repair on the back burner until I've replaced the Ignition Amplifier and Camshaft sensor, which will hopefully be next week sometime. I think it might also be prudent to stick a new set of plugs in the car, for all they cost. The seller said he put new ones in, but I'm not entirely convinced. They look clean, but new...mmm? Also thinking about a new coil pack, and the MAF has now been thrown into the barrel of monkeys too. Interesting times...but I like a challenge. Tastes all the sweeter once the problem is finally resolved ;) One other thing, is that I might be expecting more from the engine than it can actually deliver.... Cheers, Alan |

Actually, not sure why I haven't looked into this yet, but there's a list of option codes on the inside of one of the handbooks. I'm thinking one of them is for the wheels! :wall: Anyway, many thanks for these. Excellent reading, and nice to see 'my car' as it was new, although curiously, without the boot spoiler. Cheers  |
Alan, have you spoken with the seller about any of your faults??

Alan I did a search several years ago when I had the inlet manifold issue, the inlet manifold is only available as a complete unit and none of the parts diagrams show the manifold internals so impossible to find replacements I'm afraid, no idea what difference the removal made to performance compared to when it would have been new but it sure made a difference after I removed the broken plastic pieces (they are like small flaps) at 190,000 miles (good engine very smooth even at that milage) L51MNV where are you now ? Spoke too soon there's one on tradition if your interested and have a couple of thousand to spare (you can see the small torx bolts quite clearly in the picture the parts are inside the silver painted plastic top part - http://trshop.audi.de/konakart/Selec...OLD&model=0001 Alternatively if you want one to take apart and investigate without disturbing yours there are several 2nd hand ones on ebay around £35 as here - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-80-9....c100010.m2109 |

Given the low mileage my honest hunch opinion, happy to be proven wrong, would be it's unlikely the plastic part of the manifold has brocken flaps. Your mileage is less than half that of quartodaves car so all things being equal,.................you could always take yours apart to see. It's just a shame your not close to me as i could tell you whether the car feels really underpowered. 1st point, Audi factory manual should do............ https://doc-14-84-docs.googleusercon...1n0ohvuipti8qr 2nd point, the maf is probably ok it was mentioned as a potential problem, so the barrel of monkeys might be 1 less now. :) |
Don't necessary think the inlet manifold plastic flap plate is a mileage related failure more to do with the age of the plastic and heat from the engine bay, and possibly oil being injested via the manifold also having an effect on the condition of the plastic but whatever its worth a check at somepoint in the future as I'm betting if its not yet gone it will soon.

Hi.
Sorry, I've just logged on to see if there was any replies. Too tired tonight to go into any of this in detail. Been a busy day, and we've just finished getting everything ready for going away tomorrow morning. Looks like the weather isn't going to be great for traveling either. Just one think, the link to the manual, all I'm getting is.... https://i403.photobucket.com/albums/...8-232030_1.png Not sure if that's a glitch or whatever. Anyway, sorry, I need to get to my bed. I'll get back in touch when I get home again, probably Monday night. Thanks again for all the help and advice. Very grateful. Cheers, Alan |
