I'm not sure now what the rules are for importing parts, as part of the EU, I'd assume there is no duty payable for items purchased in Germany (car panels etc). Is this right? Or is there a limit to the value you can bring in?

Don't know, but have considered doing something similar for some plastic panels.

Not sure either myself.
I've been stung in the past when buying in spares from the US but never when buying from Germany. That said, I've only ever bought from Mittelmotor in Germany once before anyway and that weren't for a large amount really.

Here's a link to Stefan's site in Germany

Babel Fish Translation Help

In English:
Since 1967 our family "AUDI" drives. Father had to be before first car, a DKW junior. he bought its first old timer, a DKW F 5 of 1936 to 1965. That should become only one fun car. In seven years a full restoration became from it, and my father from the amateur handicraftsman to the old timer fan. The DKW runs still today! Thus I grew up with the four rings and you me probably unconsciously since childhood coined/shaped. There are still slides of me as Knirps beside the green AUDI 72 of my parents later drove I since the driving licence examination of father put down AUDI 60. 1986 changed I mean first exhaust, 1987 bought I the first only AUDI 60 intended for dividing. I made that then, I have fenders of it today still on the attic. Thus it went thus slowly on.... But nevertheless my hobby was actually up to then the railway. Where I was not everywhere to photograph around historical courses....Die approx.. 20,000 photos please me still today. Thus nobody would have probably safe thought more that I step times nevertheless still into father Fussstapfen and inspire me for old sheet metal, nevertheless is it today exactly the same.... Still 1984 I could a rare English Sunbeam Cabrio from father, but it was probably still somewhat too early. Thus today still pure hard Jakob, our old timer friend of many years is pleased about the car. Luck had, Reinhardt! Now I have historical Audis and each quantity of parts alone in my existence more than 2 dozen. The fact that it would become "bad" once in such a way could not suspect... In addition still the old timers of father (also Audis thereby) come. I legend always, "I know I most spare parts with first names"! That is correct also I has really everything already times in the hand had.... Thus, restore and save I, which to save ist.Falls you need thus somewhat, overhaul questions have or certain parts to search, can you me by email or telephone (contact side) reach. Perhaps I have one also for you tap or an address. Finally there are God is thanks different professional dealers, where one can acquire e.g. different rare spare parts as reproduction.

Don't belive that there is any restriction on used parts from EU only on complete vehicles and not at point of entry. I go over every year to autojumbles and often bring back a van load of bits (my mate deals in old VW van bits). Never got stopped once at uk customs. The only time I've ever been stopped is by German border guards at the Czech border, the Czech's couldn't be bothered but the 70's maustached German cop in his tight fitting leather bomber jacket made us unload the van!

German traffic police always pull me up for driving my transit and trailer on a Sunday (not allowed over a certain weight limit), but never quite know what to do with you once they've stopped you (meant to stop you driving the van until 10pm).

"Sorry don't speak German, what a strange law"

Much talking between the officers basically "we can't wait round here guarding these gypo's "

"Err sir that will be 60 euro fine, but please don't drive the van for 15mins until we are out of the area and please don't show this ticket to the next officers if you get stopped otherwise we will get in trouble for not arresting you!"

Strange country
