All you need is one decent guy at a garage who's there for the love of the car and not the money and you can find a wealth of information!
I was trying to get some info about my BMW a couple of weeks ago and the woman said the usual stock answer "sorry, can't help you", but then she said "ring this chap up on Monday, he may help..". So I rung him up and what he didn't know wasn't worth knowing! I couldn't get through at first so left a message, not expecting anything, but he rung back 20 minutes later and told dug out the cars entire history, build date, service records, previous owners, previous number plate, etc etc!! There's probably one at each garage like that, you, know the sort, over enthusiastic old boy who can list every part by part number alone, and knows what the weather was like on the day they lauched the M3 Evo.
Just gotta find one at an Audi garage now!
