There's this on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-100-AVANT...98589068918000
but looks like from a 5 cyl so may not be exactly the same.

5 pot tachometer can be turned into 4 pot one by adjusting it's adjustment bolts. I haven't done this by myself yet, I just know that it's possible :)
Ah, and by the way, C3 original dash is built a bit differently than newer ones, so the fix could be different than in pics.

As Pimp says, the whole speedometer is a self contained module. So, if the odometer isn't running, the stepper motor circuit may be the cause.

thanks for the replies,

Mark, what is a stepper motor? is it the little plastic gear that MSH mentions in this thread?

the ebay cluster is the same shape as mine although mine has a clock rather than a tacho ( my clock doesn't work too well so not too bothered with it!!) would rather have a working odometer so may bid on it if all else fails,

cheers Don

There's no gears in tachometer that could broke.
And this is stepper motor - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepper_motor

Hi msh,

I was refering to the odometer rather than the tacho, my cluster doesn't have a tacho or do you mean the same thing? I probably should have said mine has a clock rather than a rev counter!

my speedo is ok too it just the odometer and trip that have packed up , cheers

Sorry, I missed that.
There's no stepper motor inside because your speedo should be purely mechanical with cable, unless your car is equipped with cruise control, which is unlikely for 1.8.

thanks chaps, I don't think I would be confident enough to strip the speedo down and repair the gears, I wouldn't want to do all that and then discover the speedo along with odometer no longer works either, so will look for a replacement cluster,

cheers Don

no speedo in the turbo bus.....:fire::lol:

had the effin thing out 6 times now, today........

followed the smjautotechnik instructions on my red avant and it worked first time, no probs.... not this time... fahokin thing....:grr: i'm thinking that its the actual speedo unit that is pooped, so might change it..though i'm sure that will also fail.. off to 'get it out' again now..:lol:

does anyone know which sender/sensor on the gearbox relates to the speedo on a 100 turbo, i think a 016 gearbox?

there are 2 at the flywheel, nearside, i'm thinking not one of these.

and 1 further back, offside, i'm thinking this one..?

thank you

doing my ******* head in now, i have had the instrument cluster out about 10 times now today so there are no crappy solders left in it and everything else works very well.
